1. Air sealing and insulation

Full window replacement is a meaningful investment, so we recommend prioritizing based on current condition and orientation — north and west-facing windows in an older, single-pane home often deliver the most noticeable comfort improvement first.
4. Heat pump water heaters
Water heating is a significant portion of most homes' energy use. Heat pump water heaters use a fraction of the energy of standard electric resistance units and have become widely available and well-supported by regional utility rebates.
5. Smart, zoned controls
Smart thermostats and zoned HVAC controls let you avoid heating or cooling rooms you're not using, which matters more in larger or multi-story homes with uneven usage patterns throughout the day.
6. LED lighting and efficient appliances
The smallest investment on this list, but worth doing as part of any remodel — LED lighting throughout and ENERGY STAR-rated appliances add up over time and are essentially free to include when you're already renovating a space.
Sequencing matters
